The Research Process at Columbine Elementary School

handsomebuzz.gif  Rocket Research Man asks, " How can I accomplish my mission. I need a strategy?"

At Columbine Elementary the librarian is involved with teachers in teaching the following Research process:

   1. what do you already know about your topic?

   2. Define the problem.
                a. Brainstorm questions for the assignment.
                b. Group the questions.
                c. Decide what the key questions are.
                d. Identify some key words to use for searching for information.

        3. Find information to answer the questions.
                a. Where is the best place to look for the information?
                        1. Encyclopedia, almanac, atlas, internet, ask an expert, reading                a book… get help from the teacher or librarian.

        4. Get the information.

                a. Search for key words.
                b. Use indexes, tables of contents.
                c. Search databases.
                d. Note taking and graphic organizers.
                        1. Kidspiration at school. (Also see Reference
                   Resources.
                        2. note taking may be taught in class or the library.

        5. Product

                a. Students must synthesize and present information. This can be
done with Powerboats, orally, written reports, group or
          Individually.

          b.  In grades K-3, reports should be more of a factual
nature. In grades 3-5, reports should require higher-level thinking,
such as analysis, synthesis or evaluation.

          c.  Power point is taught in lab beginning second quarter of
each year in grades 2-5. First graders traditionally team with
fifth grade buddies to create a power point during fourth quarter.

        6. Evaluation
                a. How did the process work?
                b. Did you need more information?
                c. What would you do differently next time?
                d. Students should do a self evaluation, and/or
compare their projects to standards provided by
        a rubric.

This is another model for the research process...It
    has many ideas and suggestions.

II. Reference resources:

            1. Worldbookonline.com http://www.worldbookonline.com/wb/Login?ed=wb username:  columbin     password: panthers

            2. ALA great websites for kids at http://www.ala.org/greatsites. This is an assortment of websites reviewed by the American Library Association for students. It is like a phone book of great websites.

                3. Noodletools.com at http://noodletools.com/noodlebib/citeone_s.php?style=MLA

This will help students cite their sources correctly and easily. It is free and assessable from home. When you get to the site first choose the citation type and it will proceed to ask questions before producing the correct citation.
                         4. Citation Machine at http://citationmachine.net/
        Same as Noodletools.com.

           5. For graphic organizers to help organize thoughts or brainstorms go to [Link]http://www.eduplace.com/graphicorganizer/

                        For Teachers:

            6. In case you need to make a rubric for your project go to Rubistar at: [Link]http://rubistar.4teachers.org/index.php?screen=NewRubric&module=Rubistar

                         7. Another site for creating evaluation tools/ checklists:
